I shared this tutorial on Andrea's Bubblewrapp'd blog last week and I thought it would be nice to share it here as well, in case you missed it:
I was talking with Amber (@Goodnightmoon6) one day about sewing, of course, and we got to talking Boxie pouches... and whether or not you could see the 'Guts' aka exposed seam allowances in our designs. That's where "No Guts" came from... and really, the reason why I started making my Boxie's like this in the first place was because I didn't like seeing the exposed seam allowances that I found in other tutorials. Not that having exposed seam allowances, or bias trimmed seam allowances, is wrong, it's just a personal preference... and maybe a little bit of an OCD desire on my part for neat and tidy-ness.
So here ya go, enjoy!
Feel free to adjust the measurements and play around with all the different sizes and types of Boxies, this is merely my way of sharing the basics with you.
I'm also completely happy for you to share this tutorial, and even sell the Boxies you make from this tutorial, but please be sure to give me credit for my hard work, and need for tidy Boxie pouches!

Thank you so much for this great tutorial. I found it on Pinterest. I am making garment bags for my little girls for their dance recital. Now I can make them matching boxie pouches for all of their accessories!

DeleteYou just answered a question I had - if I had a bigger zipper (20 in.) what size does my fabric need to be. (and how big will my bag end up?) Thank you so much!
DeleteWould it work to turn the lining right side out through the open zipper instead of leaving an opening in the lining? That's how I do regular (un boxed) pouches. Maybe I'm not "seeing" it correctly in my head?
ReplyDeleteNot exactly... basically, you will construct the accessory wrong sides out, closing all seams with the exception of the small opening in the lining. You need that small opening to pull the pouch through, which turns it right side out, bringing all of your seams to the middle (between the lining and exterior fabrics) and out of sight. To finish you will tuck in the raw edges from the small opening in the lining and stitch it closed; push the lining into the pouch through the zipper and viola... finished pouch-no raw edges :-)
DeleteI just made one and it is cute! I did the corners the way you said, but was wondering if I could have saved some time by cutting 2 inch squares out of the corners, with the layers stacked, then stitching them once I lined up the seam lines. I use that method to make boxed corners in bags and pouches and like that I can really line things up well.

ReplyDeleteHi Gin! The finished size for this Boxie is (in inches) 8 L x 5 w x 4 h, but you can adjust the measurements to make a largest bag if you wish... over on Craftsy.com I've been seeing some creative ideas for my Boxie Pouch and am loving them all! Let me know how it works for you! XxOo~M

ReplyDeleteCan you you use a 12 in zipper? I wasn't sure where to line my fabric on the zipper with so much extra. Is there a reason for it needing to be longer? Also the tabs say to cut 1inx3in, and I found this a little to small so i did 2inx3in.

DeleteI prefer for my zips to be a little longer as a personal preference; I trim the excess near the end. You are welcome to use a smaller zip, just be sure it is long enough to be sewn into the end seams as you sew your pouch; it's a total bummer to be half way through a project and have zipper ends that don't run the length of the opening. Also, you can make whatever size loops you'd like. I prefer shorter loops so that my hardware doesn't twist around on the fabric. If you aren't using hardware, you can make the loop long enough for hanging on a hook or for use as a wristlet... I'd love to see a photo of your finished Boxie, do share!

ReplyDeleteIn your tutorial it lists the dimensions for the tab pieces as 1" x 3"... Is this correct? After all the folding and sewing they seem to come out awfully small. A different tutorial I found had them at 4" x 3" and they came out much better for me.

I think I figured it out! Is 1" x 3" the finished dimension of the tab instead of the size you should cut your fabric? If you used a piece that was 4" x 3" and folded twice along the long side it would end up as 1" x 3" when you were done... Does this sound right?
